First of all, congratulations to B1 for passing his road test. Yep, he’s now got his driver’s license and I’ve got an extra $2600 per year insurance bill. The first thing he asked for was the keys to HIS truck which I was all too ready to give him. He drove himself and a friend to school this morning. Ah! Freedom! That’s until he gets a ticket or something. For six months, he can only drive until 9 pm unless he has a job and he can only have one person who is not a family member in the truck with him. After six months with no traffic violations, he gets an unrestricted license.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools is building a new high school in the area and the re-zoning of three other high schools is quite honestly, a political mess. The demographics of the schools don’t reflect the demographics of the area at all. Six initial plans were introduced and have since been consolidated into three. One plan totally screws one school, but the other two are reasonable. Of course, the one plan that sucks will be chosen because that’s just how screwed up CMS is.
B1 is staying in the charter school, but B2 will be going to public high school next year. She’s tired of uniforms and a small school and she’s chosen a different path. Fortunately she’s been accepted into the Academy of International Studies program at the public school, so technically she won’t be in gen-pop. I also did her schedule to make certain she’s in all honors courses to also weed out the riff-raff. Do I sound like a socio-economic classist? Well, reality check – some neglectful parents think school is a day-care center and surrogate parents, someplace to send your kids when you don’t want to deal with them or their problems, so you would too if it was your kid. Sure it would be a heck of a lot easier for them to be going to the same school, but heck, no one makes it easy on mom.
I got some bad news yesterday, but N2 my thoughts are with you and I’m confident everything will be all right.
Regarding another decision I’ve had to deal with since February – after a lot of research, talking to a host of experts and people who have went through a similar experience and asking a ton of questions, I’ve made a decision. I have to talk to one more individual and get some paperwork approved and then I’ll blog about it. Well, maybe I’ll blog about it. I’m on the fence. It would be a learning experience for others like me or that will become like me, but it is a private matter. We’ll see.
I have two novels on submission with publishers and one still out with an agent. No news is good news in this business. It could take months. I have 5700 words on the new project. It has been woefully neglected and I’ll be lucky to get it done before the end of the year. Yeah, I know, I need to make time to write but it is hard. I’m such a failure when it comes to this.
Well, I’d better get back to it.
